Reflect on the textbook readings and the video on infertility and relationships. What did you learn about the process or techniques that you did not know? Do you think that you would be open to the IVF process if you and your spouse experienced infertility? What types of support do you think that you would need in order to go through IVF?

Good afternoon class,

Weil (2006) estimates that for those who end up having a baby using IVF, which often requires several attempts, the cost averages around $100,000. For those who have good insurance or can afford it, there is about a 40% success rate for this procedure, with an average cost of $12,000 per attempt. After the sperm and egg are joined in a laboratory (in a Petri dish, not a test tube), fertilization is closely monitored. (Howe, 2018)

I was not previously aware of how the PGD analysis was done or that they had the possibility of looking for genetic diseases. It makes me wonder how many people choose IVF to ensure they will have a healthy child instead of standard conception.

I believe that had I not been able to conceive a child I may have considered IVF. I believe that in order to take that leap, you would need to seek counseling and have a strong support system in place.

I found the readings as well as the video to be rather interesting. The one thing I learned was how much stress is really involved in this process. I was lucky when I got pregnant and had my children. I am blessed that I did not have to go through the process of IVF. I do know someone who did and the stress they went through and the not knowing if they were pregnant or not. Also, the pain of lossing the baby as well and having to do it all over again. Also, it is very expensive to go through and after all that, what if it does not work? To be honest I do not think I could go through with it due to personal reasons as well as religious reasons. It is against my religion. To them the baby should be made out of love and not created in a laboratory. I guess the support I would need is one of my family, as well as going to a psychologist. I would have to talk to a priest as well
