Lucy in the sky with diamonds by the Beatles was and is a fan favorite from the band. The Beatles are a band formed in Liverpool, England in the 1960s. The Beatles have been revered for their influence on music and how they meshed many musical genres together. While some considered the band to be primarily rock and roll, others considered them to have pop influences, and psychedelic rock influences. Lucy in the sky with diamonds was released in 1967 during the counterculture movement (Neves et al., 2022). This era was a time when society was objecting to social constructs, experimenting with sex and drugs, and demanding gender equality (Neves et al., 2022). One psychedelic drug that had become popular during this time was lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). While John Lennon maintained that Lucy in the sky with diamonds was inspired by a drawing his son Julian made, many fans speculated that it is actually a reference to an LSD trip (O’Malley, 2022). Even in the words Lucy, Sky, Diamonds, we see LSD. The wording and colors of the song are hallucinogenic, and the Beatles had many signs of psychedelic and marijuana use in their work (O’Malley, 2022).

Another inspiration according to John Lennon was his wife Yoko. John Lennon said, “There was also the image of the female who would someday come save me—a “girl with kaleidoscope eyes” who would come out of the sky. It turned out to be Yoko, though I hadn’t met Yoko yet. . . . The imagery was Alice in the boat. And also the image of this female who would come and save me—this secret love that was going to come one day. So it turned out to be Yoko, though, and I hadn’t met Yoko then. But she was my imaginary girl that we all have” (Kasser, 2013). Because of its implications to psychedelics, the BBC banned ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ from British radio and Clear Channel Communications banned it after 9/11 for being “Lyrically questionable” (Graves, 2021).
