The Nurse Practice Act is a set of standards or scope of practice for the licensed nurse to abide by professionally.  The scope of practice determines what the nurse is and is not allowed to perform or do in specific settings.  The Nurse Practice Act in Mississippi is set forth on the State Board of Nursing’s website and is easily accessible for anyone at anytime to check and see if a specific procedure is within their scope of practice.  I believe that it can be difficult at times to recall everything within your scope of practice, especially if it is something you are not familiar with.  If I am not familiar with a procedure and am asked to perform the procedure, I will check on the BON’s website to ensure it is within my scope so that I do not jeopardize my license, but also that patient.  Also, before delegating, if I am unsure if the LPN can perform a duty, I will also look it up.  It is of utmost importance to know your scope and those that you supervise so that you do not delegate a task outside of someone’s scope.  Ultimately, if you in fact delegate a task to someone outside of their scope, both will be held accountable for the act.  Knowing and understanding the Nurse Practice Act acts as a guide to practice, knowing and understanding the scopes of practice will assist you with managing staff on the floor, delegating, and completing tasks.  The practice act for Mississippi is broken down into different topics to easily access specific procedures and topics of interest, they are also available in PDF format to download so they are easy to refer to when needed.  Navigating the website to find answers to questions is much easier now than it used to be, there is even and Q&A forum to refer to.  I learned today, while exploring the website and practice act that as an RN, I can remove a chest tube with an order in place.  I knew that we are able to monitor it but I did not realize that the RN is able to remove the chest tube as well. I also learned that the website offers specific rules and regulations in PDF format that is able to be downloaded if needed.
