According to the DSM-V there are 10 sleep-wake disorders. The coexisting clinical conditions are the rule, not the exception. That means they are usually an indicator of other medical or neurological conditions. Some of the considerations are distress, and drug/substance abuse. The roles that biological and psychological assessments play in this category of diagnosis is that addiction, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and other medical or neurological either of biological etiology or psychological etiology must be ruled out or ruled in as being a factor or attributor to the sleep disturbance. It may be the cause of inadequate or disrupted sleep, which may in itself prove not to be a sleep disorder, but other issues.

Along with other mental health diagnosis, individuals who have a sleep disorder may also experience other mental health disorders. For example, someone who is experiencing a sleep related disorder may also experience stress. Considerations when providing an individual with an assessment may consist of if they have been diagnosed with another disorder, if an individual is experiencing more problems, and is an individual’s symptoms are explained by another diagnosis. When providing an individual with an assessment, counselors must make sure that they are a wide range of questions regards to different symptoms unless a counselor is aware of the symptoms an individual is experiencing. In this case, a counselor may provide an individual with an assessment that ask them to go into more detail about the symptoms that they are experiencing. There are disorders that may cause individuals to have symptoms of different sleep disorders so it is important that a counselor gathers the appropriate information from an individual to determine if they are experiencing a sleep disorder, if they are experiencing another disorder, or if they have co-occurring disorders.
