Re: Topic 5 DQ 2
Instructor Yoder and Class,
Social exchange theory is based on the idea that how people feel about a relationship depends on their assessments of its costs and rewards.
Equity theory is the idea that people are motivated to pursue fairness, or equity, in their relationships. A relationship is considered equitable when the benefits are proportionate to the effort both people put into it.
One element that impacts our choices about relationships considering the exchange theory would be the comparison level we have, this is the expectations we expect to get out of the relationship. There is also the comparison level for alternatives which is the expectations we feel we could get out of an alternative relationship. Basically, if one has high expectations the partner in the relationship either meets those requirements or we look to where we can find them. Another way our choices are impacted can be considered through the equity theory our text notes that collectivist cultures, where the group rather than the individual is valued, there are good reasons to suspect that equity isn't so commonly the goal. In this type of relationship, sometimes the imbalance is preferred (Gilovich et al., 2016). All in all, it comes down to what the expectations are in a relationship are. In both theories there are expectations of either cost and reward, or the expectation of equality. Paige S.
