Strategy and Description

Justification

Speaking and Listening

Total Physical Response- This technique creates situations where students must physically respond to imperative commands. Comment by Katie Kosier: Title MUST be included! Comment by Katie Kosier: A description of this strategy in your OWN words.

This strategy is applicable during this time because the student knows little to no language at all. The student will have to listen in order to correctly point to an object or playing a game that requires the student to move and follow a command (Howell, 2013). Comment by Katie Kosier: Justification why this strategy is meaningful for students at this proficiency level. An IN-TEXT citation must be included.

Reading

Print Awareness- This is a strategy where students are pointing at pictures and words for the teacher to tell them.

This strategy is applicable during this time because this is allowing the student to be apart of the reading block. Even though they cannot speak fluent English yet, they are able to point to different pictures in the book to express their acknowledgement of things (Haynes, 2007).

Writing

Free Writing and Unscaffolded Journal Writing- This is a strategy where teachers give students the chance to sit and write without having a time limit.

This strategy is applicable during this time because the student is learning to write in English and not their native language. The more the students practice the better they will get (Haynes, 2007).
