In the majority of traditional research papers, literature is used as a base and as a support for the new insight contributed by the writer. The aim of the literature review, nevertheless, is to summarize and synthesize the argument and the ideas of others without adding new contributions. The literature review paper is a secondary source and research on an already existing research report and relates it to the current status of the situation (Hayward, 2017). On the other hand, a traditional research paper is a primary source that gives an original report on a topic in various fields according to the interests of an individual, such as on an interview, book, experiment, or survey. The researcher in the traditional research paper has to collect and analyze the raw data and the study continues according to the collected data.
The major function of review is to attain a deep understanding of the existing research and arguments related to the topic of study. Concerning an individual's study, the literature review is vital as it brings clarity and focus to the individuals' research problem and improves their research methodologies (Hayward, 2017). A literature review is also significant because it contextualizes the researcher's findings and broadens the researcher's knowledge base in their research areas. It's not good to decide on a research question without conducting a thorough review of the literature because it can hinder the researcher from providing an up-to-date understanding of the subject, its significance, and its structure.
Research questions before a thorough review of literature can prevent the researcher from understanding the kind of research methods that were used in previous studies which can result in irrelevant results. When research questions and conducted before conducting a thorough review will hinder the researcher from seeing what came before and what didn’t work for other researchers and the researcher won't provide evidence that may be used to support the researcher's findings (Hayward, 2017).
