Course Project: Development and Analysis

Overview

Case studies are used extensively in teaching business. Case studies can serve as an excellent resource for revising and adapting policies. Typically, students perform an analysis on a case study prepared by an author or the professor—in this instance, the student is the author of the case. The case study research strategy provides the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of an organization or event. Data can be collected from multiple sources (i.e., company websites, interviews, or published articles). Often, case studies provide evidence for establishing best practices, developing policies and procedures, and evaluating next steps.

In this project, you will select, develop, and analyze an in-depth case analysis. This project aims to utilize course concepts to strategically analyze an organization of your choosing from one of the cases. The Course Project will build on the skills developed by the case analysis assignments done throughout the course.  You will select one case for all three parts of the Course Project.

The Course Project allows you to practice and apply specific strategic management skills learned in this course. The knowledge you have will assist you further with your professional or personal goals. The project is divided into three deliverables. You are encouraged to complete a section of your Course Project every week. This Course Project builds on each deliverable.

Note: You should start working on each section on the week the lesson material is covered.

· Deliverable 1 is due in Week 3.

· Deliverable 2 is due in Week 5.

· Deliverable 3 is due in Week 8.

Each deliverable should be an APA Microsoft Word document. Your document should use headings to direct the reader.

· Choose a case from Chapter 13 of the textbook  Analyzing Strategic Management Cases for your project from the list (review  below). Some instances are year-specific.

· You may choose to use that year or use the current year.

· The case will provide significant material, but you must also go beyond the textbook for additional information.

· Applying the concepts from the textbook is critical, so it must be done in every section with an in-text citation that includes the page number of the material used. It must consist of complete references as well.

Best Practices - Developing a Case Study

· Generate topic ideas. Brainstorm and use your experience, interests, and career-oriented choices.

· Develop initial ideas. Explore the internet and library databases.

· Select a topic. Find the best fit between the assignment and the information, interest, and experience obtained.

· Develop a research question and set of questions (e.g., Why did this strategy succeed?). Answering this question will guide data collection and help interpret results.

· Data collection and analysis

· Decide on suitable sources and means to access these sources.

· Collect published sources and record publication details (use APA format).

· Review data and determine gaps that need to be filled.

· Determine case study structure (chronological or organized around critical events and issues).

· Interpret data about the initial research question.

· Develop a rough draft, and revise, edit, and proofread it. This is critical to producing a good, quality document.

· A good case study should be as follows.

· Significant

· Complete

· Consider alternative perspectives

· Display sufficient evidence

· Be written engagingly and flawlessly

Course Project Deliverable 2 (100 points, Due Week 5)
