Reading Assignment Questions: Week 5
Due Apr 30 by 11:59pm Points 2 Submitting a text entry box or a file upload
After reading the primary and secondary texts and my lecture notes provide substantive answers to all of the following questions.
1. How does Kant claim the worth of each individual is more than their dollar amount in the marketplace (he mentions market value near the end of the reading)?
2. Why would Kant think humans are unfree within utilitarianism?
3. What is the difference between heteronomy and autonomy? Does being autonomous mean that you can choose to pursue any whim you want?
4. What is the difference between a hypothetical imperative and a categorical imperative? What are the several different versions that Kant gives of the categorical imperative?
5. Speaking of the different versions of his categorical imperatives, what does Kant mean by a “kingdom of ends”? What do you think such a kingdom would concretely look like within Kant’s framework? For example, if one tried to live out the Kantian ideal of a kingdom of ends, how would one’s treatment of a beggar differ from Bentham’s treatment? Can this difference make a difference without appealing to virtuous practices and corresponding social transformations? (it might be helpful to think about the differences between Kant's ideal of a kingdom of ends and virtue ethics' ideal political community of friendship)
