Question = Discuss how and why your knowledge of organisational culture is important to your role as a human service worker. Consider some of the organisational challenges that may occur for practitioners.

what are some of the major influences on organisational culture?

Reading = Organisational change

Although we normally think of organisational change as coming from the top down ie imposed upon workers from above by mangers, governments, funders etc but it is possible to effect change from bottom up. This is initialled by workers and other key stakeholders who identify issues of concern in terms of how the organisation functions and with to change things. Can include consultation, negotiation, consensus building, lobbying, advocacy and other actions.

Some strategies may include: developing ways of meeting needs of marginalised groups, examining diversity issues amongst staff, foramina working party (oh no!) to eg change forms used, or improving community consultation processes, the list can be endless.

Text then moves on to consider environmental change using ecological and institutional theories to help our thinking about this. The authors list impacts of change and how the change unfolds within organisations.

Planning for strategic change is important and the text uses Kurt Lewin’s model of planned organisational change. in this section on strategic planning appears the famous or infamous SWOT analysis which I am sure many of you are familiar with.

Change management and the importance of learning organisations is considered next and the chapter ends with some discussion on resistance to change and overcoming this.

This has been quite a lot of reading for this week but I think the content is not too dense and I hope you are enjoying this unit so far. Keep in mind why it is important to study this and that will help you motivation!
