RÉSUMÉS, COVER LETTERS, AND PERSONAL STATEMENTS

Assignment (Option 1): Résumé and Cover Letter for Psychology Job Posting (click to expand/reduce)

For this Assignment, you will create a résumé and a cover letter for the job posting you found in this week’s Discussion. A résumé contains important information about your education, work experience, skills, and accomplishments. A cover letter provides an opportunity to convey your interest in a job and explain why you are the best fit, based on the information in your résumé. The cover letter may be the single most important piece of information you share with employers, and it says a lot about your writing style: Is it organized? Does it make sense? Is it concise, or does it contain rambling language?

Even though you may not be ready to apply to the job posting you found just yet, it is important to always have a current working résumé that you update periodically as you gain additional experience, education, and skills. Once you are ready to apply to jobs, it is necessary to customize your résumé and cover letter for each job posting. This means presenting your education, experience, and skills in a way that closely aligns with specific duties and required qualifications listed in the job posting. Fortunately, the Psychology Career Hub offers a number of resources that can help you create a customized résumé and cover letter for any job posting of interest to you.

Assignment (Option 2): Résumé and Personal Statement for Graduate School (click to expand/reduce)

For this Assignment, you will create a résumé and a personal statement for the graduate program you found for this week’s Discussion. A résumé contains important information about your education, work experience, skills, and accomplishments. It is important to always have a current working résumé and update it periodically as you gain additional experience, education, and skills. As graduate school entrance committees read your résumé, they will look for how your experience, education, and skills apply to their program. Thus, you must customize your résumé for the graduate program, highlighting how your education, experience, and skills are relevant to the program.

The primary purpose of the personal statement is to summarize your relevant experience and convey your interest and fit for the graduate program. A personal statement for graduate school application serves as your introduction to the graduate school admissions committee; it also describes your interests in the field and explains why you have selected the program. In other words, you need to do your research on the program and its faculty members and make a case for why you are a good candidate for their program.
