Week4TeamAssignment-ScrumBoard-Tips.docx

Class,

Before you start the Week 4 Team assignment, please read the following. Many students get confused with this assignment, and the following tips should help.

The objective of a Scrum Board is to visualize progress. Anyone in the project can walk up to the Scrum Board and know exactly how far along each task / feature / request / fix is.

A Scrum Board is just a way to organize where action items are in an Agile project. This can be done with sticky notes on a whiteboard...

... or using a virtual board where team members have access to it, like this example by Cardsmith :

For our assignment, the syllabus mentions the Board tab on the "Learning Team Scrum Board Example" spreadsheet, but the tab is not visible when you open the spreadsheet. To get to it, look on the bottom left corner of the spreadsheet window and click twice on the left arrow:

You should then see the Board tab:

Scroll up to the top to find what you should be using as a template:

Here is what the columns mean:

Sprint: Which Agile iteration (cycle) did this issue come up?

User Story/Scenario: You use these to describe a goal that you are trying to implement. You can use one or both. The above example uses both ("U" and "S"). Note that they added three actions in one sprint. It is completely acceptable to add more than one per sprint.

User Story: "A user story is most often used for the purposes of AGILE development. A properly-formed story has the following structure: A [type of user] wants to [do something] so that [outcome happens]." (Kell)

Scenario: "Think of user scenarios as a real-world narrative of the process to accomplish a user's goal. A user scenario will articulate the goal, the process, and the outcome that is contextually relevant to the user. In doing so, a lot can be discovered or validated about the assumptions regarding the user and their situation/problem." (Kell)

Design - Development - Test - User Acceptance Testing (UAT): For these phases of the project, you would move the card from column to column and add appropriate details as you go.

Release: "This phase includes two processes that emphasize delivering the Accepted Deliverables to the customer and identifying, documenting and internalizing the lessons learned during the project." (SCRUMstudy)

Do not overthink this assignment, but try to add as much useful information to each "card" (cell in a spreadsheet) when you are describing them. One of the assignment's requirement is for budget information, so you probably want to include a cost value for each task.

Hope this helps,

Pat
