WEEK 4 DISCUSSION
REQUIRE READING Sports Law: Governance and Regulation (College Edition)
• Chapter 5, “Gender Equity Issues in Athletics” (pp. 147–152, 158–173) The establishment of Title IX in 1972 has had a significant influence on decisions related to gender equity issues in athletics. I have assigned this reading because the authors explain how Title IX has supported progress in gender equity for athletes and how it has been interpreted in legal cases related to gender discrimination in sports.
• Chapter 6, “Racial Equity Issues in Athletics” (pp. 185–197, 200–210) In this chapter the authors provide a historical background of racial discrimination in sport in the U.S. Though minority athlete participation has increased in some sports, the authors describe areas where significant discrimination continues to occur. The authors also explain how Title VII and Section 1981 of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 are applied to cases in which minority sport staff members allege discrimination in hiring or promotion.
