THIS WHAT YOU WROTE

The United Nations Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice denounces all forms of racial discrimination as reprehensible and unjustifiable (United Nations). While racism can be directed towards any race, racism in the U.S has been overwhelmingly towards black people who had been for a long subject to oppressive legislation and demeaning attitudes and practices. It was in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement and the unrest that followed that a raft of measures to eliminate racial discrimination soon after followed, including the signing into law of the Civil Rights Act and the delivery of the Brown v Board of Education judgment – both landmark responses in that they served to steer the U.S away from the Jim Crow era laws (History, 2009).

With some recent, highly publicized deaths of black people in the U.S being linked to racial discrimination, the response has been characterized by a global show of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, with players donning shirts with messages such as 'No room for Racism,' reputable brands pledging to be more racially inclusive in their hiring and their product range and marketing (EPL). Police reforms such as diversity training have been instituted. Other responses to racial discrimination in civilian and government spheres include affirmative action programs such as introducing racial quotas (Frum, 2000).
