Strategic Management Process (Part 2)

This week’s discussion continues the analysis of the strategic management process.

Efficiency and effectiveness, also known as profit motivation, have been two of the

distinguishing aspects of private sector firms; however, these concepts are increasingly

being applied in the public sector. Varying slightly from profit motivation, public sector

organizations are expected to be better stewards of public funds along with an implied

level of trust and accountability. Thus, public sector organizations need to develop,

communicate and manage their goals and strategy management provides a methodology

for accomplishing this.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) developed a strategic plan to

address a potential pandemic for influenza. The plan was to limit the spread of a pandemic

to the United States through preparedness and communication; surveillance and

detection; and response and containment. The agency identified key roles for all three

levels of government and community health partners. Due to Florida’s geographic and

demographic characteristics, Florida’s Department of Health developed a long-range

program plan for the upcoming five years. The plan covers disease surveillance,

emergency management, vaccine delivery, and coordination of local efforts to limit the

spread of infectious diseases (Florida Health, 2018).

an organization of your choice. In your memo, apply the insights you have learned

regarding the strategic management process by developing two (2) or three (3) initiatives

that can be realized within this organization. Be specific about the positive outcomes you

expect and the negative factors that may cause unforeseen stress to avoid or minimize.

Discuss how you will implement these initiatives, and then identify the changes in

laws/regulations and/or political appointees’ mindset may be required to overcome any

dissension or resistance that is likely to be met.

Memos are concise; devote about one page for each initiative. Format your document as

you would a professional memo with proper headings including the date, who the

document is written to, and subject line.

Total length: 2-3 pages, not including title or reference pages.

References: Include a minimum of 3 scholarly resources.

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts

presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this

topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where
