Group Participation and Case Review

Introduction

This week’s team meeting, assignment and class discussion focused on the review of an article, Designing A Culture of Collaboration at Lake Nona Medical City, using the insight of each team member. The team focused on the collaboration of Lake Nona and Tavistock to stimulate a strong community while continuing to promote innovation. We also looked at those involved to ensure the best was brought to the table for housing, medical care and education. As each team member shared their feedback on the case study, it was identified that the collaboration efforts of Seymour, Lake Nona and Tavistock encouraged innovation.

Nature of the Case

This case study describes a development of the residential and research clusters of Lake Nona. This is 7,000 acres in Florida which was built on the concept of health care and life science. It discusses the acceleration in growth and development process of innovation. Thad Seymour was five years into development when he was able to connect with a outside organizations to put a joint management structure in place. This innovation and trust attracted scientific and residential interest.

This case focus is on maintaining growth, managerial challenges between the organizational and consensus desired processes and staying competitive in a growing industry.

decision on sustaining the community and encourage innovation. This case explanation will breakdown Nona’s involvement of shareholders and partnerships to create a community of housing, medical care and education and come up with actions to sustaining the community and encourage innovation.

Facts and Assumptions

In the case study of “Designing a culture of collaboration at Lake Nona medical city” there is a lot of different examples of collaboration among different groups. With all of these examples, quite a few things can be assumed. It can be assumed that Thad Seymour is highly educated and a forward thinker, it can also be assumed that he has a medical background with connections to wealthy people. All of these combined with his ability to promote and sell his vision helped his vision of lake Nona become reality.

One of Seymour’s “first initiatives was to organize a set of councils for the leaders of organizations to discuss ways to collaborate on technology, communications, education and operations”(Edmonson et al., 2012). By doing this he was able to formulate a mindset that allows everyone to use each other’s strengths and ideas freely among one another. By formulating this process and creating a culture of this collaboration, shows his ability of forward thinking and helped establish the foundation for Lake Nona’s success.

Designing a community that revolves around medics’ technology and one that encourages growth within the community while using ideas to help create buy in by all members. This thought process leads to the assumption that he is highly educated in the medical field. By finding an established community and teaming up with Tavistock, Seymour was able to establish personal connections with wealthy people who he was able to convince them in seeing his long-term vision. This communication ability helped grow Lake Nona into a long-term success.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Although there were no considerable problems identified in the case study, there are potential issues that may present themselves when looking at projects that require such significant collaboration to achieve or maintain success. Two problems that we focused on were the probability of sustainability of such a massive collaborative community, and how to encourage continued collaboration within the organization.

The challenge of sustaining a collaborative culture was not lost on Seymour. As described at the conclusion of the case study, he found himself asking what Lake Nona could do to ensure that this collaborative culture could be sustained. How should Lake Nona and its partners ensure that unhealthy silos did not develop despite the partners’ professed desire to avoid this outcome? (Anderson, C 2019) states that maintaining a collaborative culture relies on leaders considering a comprehensive approach to workplace collaboration that enables and engages 100% of the workforce. The case study identifies the collaborative efforts at the heads of each of the institutions but doesn’t reflect much on the workforce of each of those institutions. Collaboration efforts are vital in connecting the unconnected and ensuring everyone has a voice. Often there is a serious communications failure between managers and frontline workers which is inhibiting innovation and creativity.

Maintaining a culture of collaboration also relies on reducing the number of interactions required within the organization. When we collaborate, whether by attending meetings, answering questions, sharing opinions, or simply swapping work back and forth with other colleagues, we need to interact, and interactions are often disruptions to long periods of intense focus. This can lead to a negative stance on the actual effectiveness of collaboration. Maintaining a well-balanced collaborative-individualistic culture will ensure continued innovative progress within the Lake Nona Medical City.

DECISION

In the case of Nona Medical center, there are several courses of actions which we would recommend. The first strategy will encourage continued collaboration within an organization through promoting personal accountability. This can be achieved by developing various policies which will promote individual responsibility, having policies put in place helps in ensuring that the employees' work can more efficiently on collaborative projects. Employees are supposed to take ownership over tasks, seeing them through to completion as well as bearing responsibility for results regardless of whether they are negative or positive.

The second recommendation which is likely to help in enhancing collaboration in the organization the utilization of newer and technologies which are more advanced which are included in the usage of interactive whiteboards. The usage of these boards will give room for the participants to take part in education as well as business meetings interactively. Embracing technology is recommendable because technology makes developments a bit easier for teams to work together thus improving the strategic layer of telecommunications infrastructure thus giving room for a robust network in the organization.

An alternative we do not recommend is for the facility to abandon the project. A decision of this magnitude could have adverse effects on the organization. There are several contingencies which are likely to arise in case the decision is implemented, communication will be improved since the organization, and business administrators will be able to communicate effectively by making use of the 100 percent mobile and cell date coverage all through the medical buildings. A strategy that can help in sustaining Nona’s whole community is avoiding the barriers, while embracing technology and aligning employees, as well as, management with core values and goals. The second contingency, which is likely to be experienced is the advancement of the communication, as well as, the utilization of conferencing tools for business as well as healthcare professionals (Lowe, 2016).

The chosen course of action is likely to have different impacts on the project. First, it will result in the improvement of the level of technology in a healthcare facility, thus improving the level of technological advancement in the facility. The project will be beneficial because it will enable the various aspects of research and also enhance the level of communication. The decision is likely to affect the organization in a strategic context in that it will help the organization to develop.

CONCLUSION

Team three collaborated through the case study of, Designing A Culture of Collaboration at Lake Nona Medical City, to come up with a decision on sustaining the community and encourage innovation. Nona involved the shareholders and kept transparency though the evolution, while involving valuable partners to create a community of housing, medical care and education. Nona does not have an issue that needs immediate action, but without focusing on this sustainment there are potential issues that may present themselves.
