Background
As we research and analyze data, we look to see if there is a correlation between 2 variables. For example, you find a correlation between the number of hours you watch TV and your GPA. The more you watch TV the lower your GPA that term. In this case watching TV did not cause your GPA to do down. (The underlying cause may be that you did not spend as much time on your studies!)
