Week 4 Discussion

Collaboration conflict management style

The collaboration conflict management style specifically focuses on developing practices that will benefit both one’s self and each team member  (Adams, K., & Galanes, G, 2017, p. 91).

This conflict management style places a significant values on maintaining healthy relationships.

This conflict management style is effective at ensuring healthy group interactions but often lacks the ability to be implemented in a quick manner.

After careful reflection and research, I realize that I most identify with the collaboration conflict management style. The conflict management style hones in developing procedures that may be implemented for the benefit of the entire group  (Adams, K., & Galanes, G, 2017, p.236). I currently am a team leader in which I am responsible for maintaining the cohesiveness of my team. In addition to this, I share the responsibility of diffusing conflicts that arise with team members. When dealing specifically with conflict, my goal is to implement the best strategies for the entire team recognizing that each individual's wishes may not be granted. Although the conflict management style is often successful at maintaining the healthiness of a group, it can be very time consuming to evaluate all perspectives when evaluating one issue.

2

How to effectively use this conflict management style?

Take time to build meaningful relationships with each group member.

Provide opportunities for group members to develop meaningful relationships.

Embrace conflict by addressing it versus ignoring it.

Allow control to be distributed so that group members are able to share the power.

Let’s see the collaborative conflict management style!

The collaboration conflict management style

In this example, Michael assumed the role of the leader.

He did not ignore the conflict, but instead faced it.

He shared control by allowing each group member to express personal feelings about the poster on Angela’s desk.

Then, he allowed each group member to process the conflict and share a possible solution.

The collaboration conflict management style continued…

After considering each perspective, Michael established that the most logical way to solve the problem was to allow Oscar to wear a replicated version of the poster on a shirt so that Angela would be able to enjoy the shirt without making Oscar feel uncomfortable.
