Leadership Key Parts
Leadership is a complex thing that requires one to have the ability to work in all categories. It is hard for one to be a leader if one cannot be a follower or even an active member of a team. As a matter of reality, it is by being good team members that one learns and acquires quality leadership skills. It is also by being a good follower where one complies and respects the authority of the leader that one also learns how to lead. Most importantly, despite one being a team member and a good follower, it also important to be a good leader. All these parts of leadership have specific concepts that dictates what exactly makes one a good leader, follower, and a team member. This essay shall hence focus on analyzing the concepts of being a leader, follower and team members and the specific things that one can do to serve in all these positions in the course of career development.
Being a follower
According to Khoshhal, & Guraya, (2016)’ being a good leader starts by being a good follower. Being a follower does not mean that one should not take an active part in supporting the leader. It only means that the orders and final decisions would come from the leader but the follower participated actively and would also help in implementing. Being a follower means working collaboratively with the leader with respect and commitment. There are specific characteristics that makes one a good follower; one must be enthusiastic and also must set the bar high and work towards achieving the set goals (Mullen, 2016). Being a follower also entails taking the initiative and ensuring that success is achieved, and requires one to learn always in order to improve on skills and working tactics. Lastly, it entails always being ready to serve others (Khoshhal, & Guraya, 2016). One can be a good follower being listening to the leader, sharing ideas and opinions whenever necessary, and encouraging other followers to respect set policies and apply learned techniques to achieve the set goals.
Being a team member
Being a member of a team comes with its benefits and challenges. It is a position that allows one to work collaboratively with other people through team work. Though it might be hard because different members of a tem have different personalities and some are hard to deal with and others are easy to get along with (Jenkinson, Oakley, & Mason, 2013). However, it is possible to become a good team member by first learning the vital skills like interpersonal skills, communication skills, and active listening. Being a team member means being supportive to other members and committed to team goals and objectives. It also requires one to respect other team members and avoiding situations of bringing other people down or making them feel inferior and bad about themselves. Additionally, it is almost impossible to avoid conflicts in a team; good team members must be ready to compromise in order to embrace peace (Jenkinson, Oakley, & Mason, 2013). Serving in a team can be interesting as it helps in polling efforts and ideas together and easily achieving set goals and objectives. In the course of my career, I will serve in a team appropriately by being active, reasonable, responsible, and respectful.
Being a leader
Being a leader means being in full control of situations though in a good way. One does not have to be authoritative in order to be considered a good leader but rather have the ability to influence. Leadership is sensitive because it is the decisions of a leader that followers and team member comply and implement (Kase, 2010). This means if a leader makes a mistake, all other positions are misled. It is for this reason that despite being a leader, one should engage people in other lower positions because sharing of ideas and opinions leads to broad and critical thinking. According to Hao, & Yazdanifard, (2015); being a leader means being innovative, creative, a good decision maker, humble, and respectful. The more reason is that a leader should not only expect respect from followers but should also respect them as well. Moreover, a leader must lead by example in all aspects. This means that is a leader desires subordinates to work hard, the leader must also work hard.
For one to be a good and effective leader, it is important to learn and make use of the vital skills like effective and clear communication, active listening, and problem solving skills. Also, the leader must be patient with subordinates and learn to engage them ethically and professionally in order to create a positive environment. Moreover, being a leader requires one to learn new ideas consistently. In the course of my career, I would serve as a leader by being a servant to the others and leading by example (Hao, & Yazdanifard, 2015). I would also serve by being creative and innovative as well as supporting creative ideas that subordinates would come up with as well as making all members to feel valued and appreciated for the contribution they make towards the progress of the group.
