Motivation is an important characteristic for a leader to possess. I got taught that we cannot motivate someone, only activate their motivations. While I believe this, certain leaders can reach down and pull out the best in others. Part of this would revolve around ensuring that criticism was given properly and possible solutions or guidance on how one would arrive at a proper answer or solution - and should always be constructive. When I work with my son, I try to explain that he cannot come to me only with problems. He must also come with solutions. I think that a leader has to do this with their people as well. We cannot give just negative criticisms and expect someone to be motivated and excel. On the other hand, if we give guidance and possible ways to arrive at positive conclusions or results, we get a different response from the team member. What steps do you take to ensure that sensitivity is a substantive component in your department?
