TOPIC

SIOP

Review the Society for Industrial and Organizational (SIOP) website. www.siop.org  SIOP is an organization with over 8000 members around the world. It has an online job board if you are looking for jobs in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Consider if joining SIOP and/or attending next years’ annual conference might be right for you. Remember the Ignite Style presentations from Week 1? For the past few years, the Ignite presentations at the SIOP annual conference were among the most attended.  In your initial post, include at least one thing that you learn about SIOP from viewing the website. Also, find something relevant to this week’s topic on diversity or global issues. (Hint! Consider typing “global” or “diversity” in the search engine on the home page).  Please respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.  Try to highlight similar interests and/or build on another student’s information regarding SIOP in your follow-up posts.

Respond to classmate 1:

After viewing the SIOP website, it reminds me of the NAADAC website in terms of the resources it has available for members. I specifically looked through the "items of interest" section and was quite surprised at the wide variety of subjects that were being discussed. The amount of information available was a bit overwhelming to be honest, and I found myself about seven browser tabs in before I knew it.

I did check out the cost of membership, and I am possibly going to try the student option. I doubt I will attend the conference next year unless it is virtual, due to other travel commitments consuming my allotted "conference funds."

The topic of diversity is a favorite of mine. The fact that it is 2021 and there are people being passed over for jobs or promotions due to their skin color is a travesty. I feel that diversity training should be mandatory for anyone in management. Richard et al. (2021) add "experimental research has shown that individuals in diverse groups spend considerably more time considering their own and others’ perspectives in anticipation of interaction with someone who differs from them along racial lines." This suggests that by considering others' opinions, one has more information to make a better decision. I cannot understand why someone would not want as much information as possible prior to making a decision that may impact the companies workers.

Respond to classmate two:

I do not find that I would benefit from attending any type of diversity trainings or conferences.  I have not been able to find any credible evidence or research that inclusion coincides with diversity or equality.  I do not find it necessary to intentionally scout out a particular group of individuals based any anything other than merit.  Focusing on diversity can makes businesses less productive as they are focusing less on respect and making sure that all employees feel welcome.  In terms of SIOP, two things from the website I am interested in learning about are written and verbal communication.  I would like to become an expert in this topic.  I often say that 99% of the world´s problems are about communication.   I am currently working as an administrator for an organization that teachers English as a Second Language.  I noticed that a lot of the instructors have trouble managing class discussions and are unable to mentor students effectively.  Therefore, attending the SIOP conference could benefit me in training our teachers in this area as well.  Another area that would benefit me is to get experience in designing and conducting research studies.  I am very interested in behavioral economics as well as behavior change psychology.  At the root of both of these are communication.

I would like to work with universities and organizations in improving their communication.  Written and verbal communication are listed in the Academia section as the top two competencies (www.siop.org (Links to an external site.)).   Concerning written and verbal communication and diversity, there is an intersection of a lot of factors that can have unintended consequences as well.  Leslie (2019) pointed out that one intended goal of diversity initiatives is to focus on the target groups and increase their representation.  However, there is no evidence that this strategy works.  It could be that some organizations do not communicate effectively and some groups may feel marginalized as a result.
