Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Shield Law

You are a reporter who is covering a story for the Town Times about a man who entered a local bank, robbed it of $5,000, and shot and wounded a bank guard while fleeing. The suspect is at-large. You were told the suspect’s name and found out where his sister lives. You called her and she amazingly agreed to meet you at a restaurant to give you background on why she feels her brother is not guilty of any wrongdoing. In the course of your conversation with her, she lets it slip, “I know where my brother is hiding, but I am unable to tell you where that is.” You wrap up the conversation and are faced with a dilemma. Do you immediately call police and give them a tip that the suspect’s sister knows where he is staying? Or do refrain from calling authorities because you got the information from a source? What is the greater public good: protecting a news source or getting a robbery suspect behind bars? Explain your answer.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
