From your choice of topic, write a 250-300 word essay answering the questions pertaining to that topic.  At the top of your essay, tell me which citation style you are using - APA, MLA, or Chicago.  Show your professionalism by using them correctly.  Have a References/Works Cited/Bibliography at the end of your essay.

Have at least 3 paragraphs in the essay.  Write a clear Introduction with a strong Thesis statement.  Think about ways to develop your subsequent paragraphs, using a topic sentence and evidence. Be sure to end with a strong Conclusion.  You may also ask for free writing help from the tutors at the Effective Writing Center.  Go to the top of this page and click on "Resources" to find their link.

YOU MUST USE ONE OR MORE OF THE ARTICLES I HAVE ATTACHED AND REFERENCE THEM!

And, of course, you may ask me questions as well about how to proceed with writing a good essay.

1)  Education:  How do the ideas about African Americans in The Upward Path counter the messages young black people received about themselves in segregated schools and the typical educational materials given to black students at that time?

2)  World War I and The Great Migration:   How did World War I influence black people in the Southern United states to move to other sections of the country?

3)  Political Activities and Oppression:  What were the two most important achievements of the NAACP in this time period to address racial injustice?  Why do you think they were unable to do more about physical crimes like lynching, Red Summer, and the Massacre of Black Wall Street?

4)  "The New Negro" and "The Harlem Renaissance":  Select an artist, musician, or writer from the list provided.  How does this person’s work reflect on what both Langston Hughes and Alain Locke wrote about what black people were experiencing during the 1920s and early 1930s?

Select from these artists:  James Weldon Johnson, Rudolph Fisher, Jean Toomer, Gwendolyn Bennet, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, and Aaron Douglas.

Please make sure to follow the scoring rubric.
