Habit #1 Accepting and Abiding in God’s Unconditional Love
We know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in them.

It starts with what’s inside of us
We cannot give to others love, peace, hope, or security if we ourselves have not received it first. (Blanchard, Hodges, & Hendry p. 93)
Believing that it is possible for God to love you will lead you to God – and God enables us to believe in his love the son Jesus’ death on the cross and the Holy Spirit’s work in our hearts. (Blanchard, Hodges, & Hendry p. 90)

Why are we talking about God’s love in when we talk about leadership?
The answer is this: God’s love will change you and by extension change your leadership.
You will see leadership differently; it becomes less about power and control and more about the stewardship of the people you touch and the work God has given you to do.

Habit #2 Solitude
Very early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up and left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Solitude is stepping out the back door of your noisy life of to-do lists and demanding relationships and breathing in some fresh air.
Solitude will:
Reveal how you’re really doing.
Helps you discover what is most meaningful and importance. The unexamined life is not worth living (Socrates).
Give you insight into your character.
Gives you energy.
Let you actually hear from God.
Establish priorities: solitude accelerates clarity.
Restores your soul: If you have lost your soul. Solitude will help you find it.

Jesus model of solitude
Matthew 4:1-11 When preparing for the rest of His public ministry, Jesus spent 40 days alone in the desert.
Luke 6:12-13 Before Jesus chose His twelve apostles from among his followers, He spent the entire night alone in the desert hills.
Matthew 14:13 When Jesus received the news of the death of John the Baptist, He withdrew in a boat to a solitary place.
Matthew 14:23 After the miraculous feeding of the five thousands, Jesus went up the hill by himself.

Pray for Humility- Most studies on the traits of effective leadership include the attribute of humility.
Pray for Direction- Every leader will find themselves in a crisis where nothing they know or have been through is adequate to inform their next decision.
Pray for Courage- It is much easier to act with courage– to make the hard decisions, when you know that God has equipped you and empowered your leadership.
Pray for Reassurance and Affirmation- All great leaders get hurt. People will leave the company or disagree with your decision, but God reassures us that he will not leave us.

Jesus taught that the head of the table seats were by “invitation only”. And the head table is not for those who think they deserve it.
It is for everyone who was formerly excluded…the refugees, the poor, the women, the mentally ill, those who were always on the outside of mainstream society.

Being a follower is good training to becoming a leader.
Following is at the core of being a servant leader – the word “disciples” means “learner”
Jesus teaches that we learn to lead by learning to follow.
First be a Follower… Obey
Obedience begins with listening.
Then you are moved to action (this is the response).
Obedience is simply translating what you heard and putting it into action.
To be a follower first you must be willing to obey the person you are following you.
When to lead… when to follow
“Obedience is not an act of subservience to a dictator; it is an act of love and respect. Jesus said he would know how much you and I would love him by the way we obey (do) his commandments (John 15:10,14)” (Wilkes, 1998, p. 81).
What can we learn about the role of the leader and the follower from the Tango? A lot. Pay attention and reflect as to the significant role the follower in making the Tango work and making it work beautifully. As you watch the clip, write down the qualities that make a good follower.
