Tutorial for the Week Three Worksheet

This tutorial will walk you through the process of filling out your Week 3 worksheet for ANT101.

The Week 3 worksheet will help you prepare for the final paper.

You can find the Week 3 worksheet within the assignment instructions.

In Step 1), you’ll choose one of the topics listed on the worksheet.

Click on the link embedded in the worksheet to see more information on each topic.

You’ll choose one of the topics (or aspects of culture) from this list.

Consider how each topic fits with your major and/or your interests.

For example, if you’re in the College of Education, you might choose Education.

Students in the College of Health, Human Services, and Science might choose Healthcare.

Forbes Business School students might be interested in Business.

Ryan, L. (2011). Muslim women negotiating collective stigmatization: ‘We’re just normal people.’ Sociology, 45(6), 1045-1060. Retrieved from the SAGE Journals Online database.

Read the relevant section of the textbook related to your topic. You will use this for Part I of your paper.

Read the assigned article that corresponds to your topic, which you will use for Part II of your paper.

Let’s use the topic of Education as an example.

You’ll read sections from Chapter 3 and 4 of the textbook as well as the article by Jonsson (2014).

Delete all options other than your chosen topic.

Before you start doing research for your paper, make sure you understand what you need to do for the final paper

Take some time to review the Week 5 final paper instructions and the flow chart.

The flow chart will show you, step by step, how to complete each part of the paper.

In the flow chart, there are also links to examples of each part of the paper.

Let’s briefly look at the example of Part I of the paper.

The topic here is education, and the example highlights a discussion of higher education in America from an etic (outsider’s) perspective.

Both the textbook and the article by Miner are used.

The example also draws upon other reputable scholarly sources. Think back to the Evaluating Sources tutorial you did in Week 2 for help in determining what kind of sources should be used.

Returning to the Week 3 worksheet, in Step 2), you’ll find a source to use for Part I.

As shown in the example for Part I, you will use the textbook and the article by Miner, as well as another source you have found through your own research. Include the reference for the source that you found through your own research here. Make sure this source fits with the topic you chose in Step 1).

This link will take you to the Ashford Writing Center and show you how to format your reference entry in APA format.

This is what step 2) should look like when completed:

U.S. Department of Education. (2012). Federal student aid strategic plan 2012-2016. Retrieved from

http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/static/gw/docs/FiveYearPlan_2012.pdf

For step 3), you will copy and paste the reference entry for Part II that corresponds to the topic you chose.

For example, if you chose the topic of Education, you would use the article by Jonsson for Part II.

This is what step 3) should look like when completed:

Jonsson, R. (2014). Boys' anti-school culture? Narratives and school practices. Anthropology and

Education Quarterly, 45 (3), 276-292. Retrieved from the AnthroSource database.

For step 4), you will summarize the two sources you’ve listed on the worksheet. Here are the examples we’ve used:

U.S. Department of Education. (2012). Federal student aid strategic plan 2012-2016. Retrieved from

http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/static/gw/docs/FiveYearPlan_2012.pdf

Jonsson, R. (2014). Boys' anti-school culture? Narratives and school practices. Anthropology and

Education Quarterly, 45 (3), 276-292. Retrieved from the AnthroSource database.

This is what step 4) should look like when completed:

This link will take you to the Writing Center’s Guidelines for Summarizing Sources.

Write a complete summary of the author’s main points in your own words.

Do not copy the abstract from the article.

In its five year strategic plan on federal student aid, the U.S. Department of Education (2012) notes that…[include at least 300 words describing the main points covered in this source and how it is relevant to the topic you’ve chosen].

In his article on boys’ anti-school culture in Sweden, Jonsson (2014) discusses…[include at least 300 words describing the main points covered in this source and how it is relevant to the topic you’ve chosen].

For Step 5), you will write a working thesis for your final paper.

This link will take you to the Writing Center’s thesis generator, but keep in mind that, if you use this, you will need to adjust this thesis statement to reflect the full purpose of the paper.

This link will take you to a sample introduction and thesis statement for this particular paper.

Here is the sample introduction for this paper:

Don’t forget that your thesis statement should cover: ● Your topic (in this case, Education) ● An overview of how you will

address this topic in your own culture from an etic (outsider’s perspective)

● An overview of how you will address this topic in another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective

This is what step 5) should look like when completed:

Over the course of this paper, I will examine an aspect of my own culture through an etic lens in order to gain the perspective of an outsider, and I will examine an aspect of another culture from an insider’s perspective in order to become more familiar with the motivations behind this practice. Specifically, I will examine the state of higher education in America and discuss anti-school culture among boys in Sweden to show that what Americans consider “normal” is unusual in a wider context, and to examine how cultural narratives are perpetuated and how they can negatively affect student performance. In both cases, culturally based expectations are treated as the norm and often go unquestioned.

Once completed, this worksheet will help you write your final paper.

Step 1)You picked your topic.

Steps 2) and 3) You picked your sources and formatted them in APA style for your reference section.

Step 4) You showed how your sources will be useful for Parts I and II of the paper.

Step 5) You created a working thesis statement, which you can adjust according to your instructor’s feedback if necessary.

Let your instructor know if you have any questions while filling out this worksheet.

Be sure to review all feedback provided by your instructor before beginning your Week 5 Final Paper.

Good luck!
