WEEK 3 RN CAPSTONE POST DISCUSSION REPLY
Resilience and Change
Post Discussion Reply
Resilience can be defined as the ability of being able to adapt to tough situations positively. Nursing resilience is shown to greatly reduce the amount of burnout in nurses. There is a high turn over rate among nurses and as nurses start to learn a sense of belonging, their resilience builds. Thus lowering the level of burnout, and reducing the turn over rate. High turn over rate is associated with poor outcomes for patients (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2019). Building resilience may take time, making it harder for new grads. One of the important factors is that there is a positive environment in the workplace, it is important for nurses to get satisfaction from their position at work. New grads or new hires in an unfamiliar place it is important for them to have mentors, debrief after stressful situations, and do self reflection. For all nurses it is vital to maintain both a work-life balance and recognize stressful triggers (Henshall et. al., 2020).
Change is a huge part of healthcare. There is constantly new technology and studies done to improve patient outcomes. The hard part about change for nurses, is that many become complacent. This is where having a good nurse leader is vital. A good nurse leader can motivate a team to make change, while listening to concerns of team members. Changes can be communicated in many different ways, emails, posters, meetings, and educational seminars. As a nurse it is important to be able to maintain an open mind to change as it promotes positive patient outcomes. Change and resilience can be linked together. When nurses are burnt out they become less willing to change or listen to the new data that promotes better patient outcome (Gesme et. al., 2020).
