JAMES CAMERON & THE APPLICATION OF AUTEUR THEORY 2
Auteur theory is the idea that provides all powers to the director and terms the director as
the author and the main creative force behind the movie. This can be explained as the idea that
the movies belong to their directors only and the whole creative team is ignored as the movie
gets the personality of its director. This theory states that the personal vision of a director heavily
impacts the movie. The movies that are directed by such directors are supposed to have a stamp
of style and theme. Mostly these type of movies are termed “epic” as they belong to the epic
genre where the super natural forces and symbolism is used to create a large setting for a movie.
This theory is very controversial as first of all, calling the director as the author of a movie looks
unfair because movies are written by different people and they are directed by different people.
Secondly, the theory provides all the powers to the director and ignores all the other people in the
creative team. Another controversy is that this theory gives privilege to white male directors and
obstructs the culture and its values. James Cameron is considered to be an auteur director and his
movies like titanic and avatar are known to be examples of his auteur nature. In this paper, we
will be exploring different aspects of his nature which shows his auteur personality.
James Cameron is said to have all three specialties that an auteur personality or director
should have. The way he directs his movies say it all about him being an auteur director. The two
very famous movies of this director are titanic and avatar. Both these movies have got the
personalities that match the personality of their director who is very much involved in making
this movie. Mostly it is said that these movies would not be this much famous if they were not
directed by an auteur director like James. Titanic was his first great movie that was released in
1997 and this movie is considered in the epic genre (Heard, 1998). The movie doubled its
original estimated worth even though it was the most expensive movie of its time. The movies

run time was 195 minutes while it crossed the revenue of $1 billion (Bagnoli, 2015). It remained
on top of the list till 2009 and that is when James dropped his next hit film and it broke the
record. Titanic is considered an epic movie because it was an amalgam of genres and emotions.
Epic genre consists of the movies that have a long or broad plot/setting and it has supernatural
heroes and setting that have deep hidden meanings. The story and the plot twists had the
audience on the roller coaster of emotions. The main characteristic of this movie that made it this
much famous is the direction and twists which touched a lot of areas. Touching a lot of social
classes, romance, breaking the stereotypes and other different topics is what makes this movie
special. The technicalities of combining all these stories altogether and the sinking of the ship
show the technical competency of the director. The same is the case with his other movie
“avatar” where a lot of imaginary creations were so technically presented that the movie became
another hit movie.
James chooses to direct and present the movies in a very unique way and hence the
quality of his works pays it all back. The director chooses quality over quantity and that is why
whatever work he did was a hit. Another reason which James is considered to be the auteur
director is that he has a style that can be distinguished easily because of its uniqueness and he
tries his best to leave the impact of his distinguished personality on the theme of the movie by
directing it in a very specific way (Burger, 2014). the distinguishes characteristics of his movie
are that they must have a seen which can be symbolic as in titanic the whole ship sank which in
avatar the tree fell beautifully depicting the idea that was to be explained in the movie. James
Cameron uses sound to make the scenes more lively and unique. The whole movie can have the
same background lyrics but the emotions of the singers can be different according to the best

fittings with the scene and that makes his movies unique.
James presents movies having a lot of internal meanings and symbolism. James has got
this unique way of adding meanings to the stories that make the movies stay on top of the lists
and gain awards. Titanic symbolized the stories of class differences and how these differences
affect society and its members. It also shows that the young generation is trying to break the
stereotypes and go above these differences to find peace and stay happy. The sinking then
symbolizes the pain and hopelessness that is the part of every story. Every story does not end
well. In avatar, the director has shown the proper balance between peace and destruction. As the
tree represents the house and its falling or imbalance shows the destruction.
The writer has depicted the concept of respect in both movies and how to gain it. He uses
sound, music, and emotions in a certain way that keeps the attention of the audience intact. He
successfully depicts the idea that has to be reinforced. Cameron’s movies change the perceptions
of their audience by explaining certain concepts in a certain way that is engaging. Both of the
famous movies show life before and after the disaster and how it changes totally after the
incident. There is a specific technique and the amalgam of emotions along with the technique of
using sound which proved to be the success of James movies. James gets involved in the movie
on a very deep level that his, movies show his personality from the way it is presented. The
unique personality merged with the technical competence of the director brings all the spice to
the movie and brings the whole meaning to the movie that is both in terms of the literal meaning
and the internal meaning that is symbolic or hidden. The famous movies of James changed the
lives of so many people that it made Cameron a very successful director.
