George Okpani

Good Evening Professor,

It is essential for us to compare the purpose of nursing from the perspective of the patient as we examine the term person-centered. For a minute, imagine finding ourselves in an unfortunate medical condition that has resulted in us being admitted to an emergency department. The admission process is stressful and filled with uncertainty. How would this make us feel? Pirhan et al. (2022) point out that ‘holistic nursing practices are generally defined as taking a mind-body-spirit-emotion-environment approach to the practice of traditional nursing’ (p. 372). Oftentimes people who have never been admitted to the hospital experience emotions of overwhelming stress, fear or confusion. Next, imagine being confronted with questions from a person in scrubs. While they might have introduced their name and role; given the current circumstances, it is easy to discover that it is becoming increasingly difficult to pay attention to what they are trying to say. Selective listening is said to occur as a response to stress (Yaribeygi, 2017). At this time our healthcare will be managed by a complete stranger; there are a couple of important concerns that will begin to arise. These concerns may include having thoughts asking who will be taking care of me, what will happen next, and how can I trust what is being done? I believe every nurse focused on providing patient centered care has to be willing to reflect on this reality from the patient’s point of view. This is why communication is essential and inseparable from the care plan process. Ideally holistic nursing relies on considering this along with asking questions that eliminate the possibility of missing much needed resources like transportation to the patient’s care plan.

As a nurse practitioner I would keep patient’s cultural concerns at the front of care plan development. Reviewing my own cultural beliefs may allow me to identify any biases that mighty hinder my understanding about the patient. Incorporating questions that evaluate how patient’s feel physically and emotionally would help provide patients with a voice in their care.
