After performing a close reading on the two poems, Spenser's Sonnet 75 (Vol. 1, p. 490) and Shakespeare's Sonnet 60 (Vol. 1, pp. 559-560) they both share the idea of time. In Sonnet 60 the kind of time is explained as occuring through the lives of people. Shakespeare compares minutes and waves by explaining how fast time goes by just like a wave. There is no stopping a wave or time meaning they both continue to move forward. On top of both of those that keep moving forward so does life, humans just keep aging and aging. Humans then eventually pass away. Before you know it life ends. What I mean by that is just in the blink of an eye at the beach waves crash down. He also illustrates time as an enchanting beast saying it stops the growth of early life and in beauty pushes crinkles. In lines one and two of Spenser's Sonnet 75, he says “One day I wrote her name upon the strand, but came the waves and washed it away,” (Spenser's Sonnet 75 Vol. 1, p. 490). By strand, the author means the sand at the beach. While he keeps writing her name, the waves keep washing it away. Spenser’s beloved believes it is silly for him to be writing her name in the sand. The waves represent time passing by also saying one day the memory of the author’s wife will also wash away eventually. Spenser’s reason for wanting the object of his affection to live on through the poem is for her memory to live on in an angelic space but Shakespeare’s view differs than Spencer’s. Shakespeare wishes for his partner to grow to be immortal in a more human domain. Each sonnet is comparable by talking about time, how quickly it can pass by along with how fast just life in general passes by for humans.

The main importance in both Spencer’s sonnet 75 and Shakespeare’s sonnet 60 is the rapid passage of time. In sonnet 75, Spencer wanted the object of his affection to live on in the heavenly world throughout his verses. In contrast, in sonnet 60, Shakespeare wanted his affection to be immortal in the earthly world by using his poem. The two sonnet are primarily concerned with the passage of time, and how human beings will in their latter ages. There is use of metaphor in the two sonnets, especially that of the wave illustrating how human beings are over almost in a flash.

Spencer uses sonnet 75 to outline the immortalizing writing quality, whereby the poem’s speaker writes her name upon the strand and observe it as washed away by the tide. The main reason why Spencer wanted the object of his affection to live on through the poem to illustrate the concept of love. Spencer used a genuine consummation of passion, recovery and self-persistence to invoke the issue of love while trying to delineate a new type of married love. Sonnet 75 is beautiful by capturing an awareness of dominance in human preservation. In the poem, the speakers explain writing his affection’s name in the sand, but the tide wash it away. Regardless of such a disappointment, he tries again and this symbolizes that his love is going to last throughout challenges despite the challenges.

In contrast, in sonnet 60, Shakespeare want to depict time as a ravaging monster affecting the success of youths. Shakespeare believes that the verse will stand over time and will continue praising the value of his affection regardless of the cruel challenging time. Therefore, this shows that Shakespeare acknowledged the challenges they faced with his affection, but he wanted her to be immortal in the earthly world to teach the audience about such challenges and how to overcome them.
