Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words each question, post must be substantive responses: 

1. According to Sue & Sue (2013), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has created the following definition for disability: “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual.” While people with and without disabilities may face challenges throughout their cultural experience, the authors of the text suggests that people living with a disability may experience more challenges throughout their life and cultural experience than those who do not have a disability, and provides statistical data to support the extent of this notion.  When looking at the cultural experience of children with a disability, unfortunately, this population of children may be more at- risk of being a victim to more harsh treatment, experiencing challenges such as neglect, bullying at home and/ or at school, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and/ or sexual abuse (Sue & Sue, 2013). The text highlights that women who are living with any form of a physical disability may be far more likely to experience different forms of depression than women who are not living with a physical disability (Sue & Sue, 2013). People who have a more severe disability are more likely to experience higher unemployment and poverty rates, as well as having much lower college completion rates when they are compared to people who do not live with disabilities (Sue & Sue, 2013). When rating overall satisfaction of life, people with disabilities tend to lave lower ratings (Sue & Sue, 2013).

2. Some cultural differences can be that individuals with disabilities may experience more microaggressions such as helplessness and denial of personal identity, microinsults, and lesser opportunities for jobs and services than a non-disabled person. According to center for disease control (cdc.gov) “People with disabilities are far less likely to be employed. In 2017, 35.5% of people with disabilities, ages 18 to 64 years, were employed, while 76.5% of people without disabilities were employed, about double that of people with disabilities”. In our text, Microaggressions can be defined as brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to a target group, such as people of color; religious minorities; women; people with disabilities; and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals (Sue & Sue, 20116). The text mentions that ableism is rarely discussed as a modern form of oppression. This is a term I have not heard of until the reading, and now I am able to attach a term to some of the things I have seen in the past whether on the playground and/or workplace. Non-disabled and a person with disabilities may have similar cultural experiences of being discriminated against, less job opportunities and services they are able to access.
