There are several skills on which emergent readers are assessed.

1. Knowledge of the Layout of Books.
2. Knowledge That Print, Not Pictures, Is What We Read.
3. Directional Orientation of print on the Page.

4. Knowledge of the Concept of Beginning and End.
5. Knowledge of the Terms Top and Bottom.
6. Knowledge of the Terms Word and Letter.
7. Knowledge of Uppercase and Lowercase Letters.
8. Knowledge of Punctuation.

Alphabet Knowledge - extremely important for children. If there is no alphabet knowledge it is very difficult to move forward with instruction.
The Concept of Word is more difficult to teach than concept of print. There are specific steps that should be taken when assessing this skill.

Phonological Awareness includes syllables, onsets and rimes, and phonemes which are the smallest speech sounds in language.
