Directions:This is a two part assignment. Please read the instructions given by the instructor in Part 1 &2 below in yellow, below you will find notes regarding my observation. The topic taught was Women’s Suffrage. I use Quizlet to assist with vocabulary which allows the students to utilize the Read Aloud. I also incorporated an article regarding the subject as a bellringer (see attachment women’s suffrage). This is a Reading Education Course, however I observed a Secondary Social Science (US History Class).

Part 1.

Small or Whole Group Instruction

With your mentor’s approval, work with one small group of students or the whole class on the current lessons the mentor teacher is implementing. Note the students’ reading fluency and comprehension and the effect on their understanding of other content area concepts.

After your instruction, discuss with your mentor any feedback he or she might offer on your delivery. In addition, review the literacy activities you created in Topic 2 with your mentor. Select one activity to implement with a small group of students, and arrange to deliver it during your next field experience. Solicit feedback from your mentor to help you improve and finalize the activity before the implementation.

Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.

Write a 250-500 reflection discussing the following:

· Description of the small or whole group instruction including lessons you taught, the content objectives, and your implementation experience.

· Mentor feedback on your instruction, including what you did well and what you could do better.

· What additional instructional strategies you would use to integrate reading development into the lesson to provide comprehensive development for all readers and writers.

· How the students’ current reading fluency and comprehension affected their understanding of the content.

Notes: These are notes that were taken regarding the lesson, perhaps you can incorporate the findings in the reflection.

What went well (strengths)?

I thoroughly enjoy teaching the students. I am inspired by their determination to learn despite their current circumstance. I believe the lesson went well as evident of my student’s ability to recall vocabulary learned in the beginning of the week.

I was able to incorporate videos and utilized cross-curricular themes to integrate reading strategies into my lesson. (I.E Bellringer)

Weaknesses delta?

The weakness with my presentation was the inability to keep students positively engaged in the lesson.

The lack of face-face interaction makes it difficult to effectively teach reading strategies. Instead of using Quizlet, I would probably use another digital platform to present vocabulary such as Kahoot.

What you would do differently if you taught this lesson to the same students and impact.

If I had to teach the same lesson to the same group of students, I would perhaps lessen the amount of information presented at one time, pausing and incorporating more comprehension allowing students to recall information learned.

I’d also incorporate more comprehension strategies and open the lesson with a bellringer using comprehension text from Commonlitt.

Instructor Notes and Regards:

I've enjoyed watching you in action! You an amazing phenomenal teacher!

The Interpretation of information needs to presented in such a way that even the struggling learner will understand the material presented. As we discussed encourage the students to pull information from prior lessons.

Part 2.

Effective teachers use multiple approaches to integrate and create a balanced literacy curriculum for all students, especially in secondary education. Using a variety of literacy strategies can help ensure the teacher is meeting the needs of all students and creating an engaging learning experience for all students.

Part A: Matrix (look at attachment entitled Matrix)

Complete the “Instructional Strategies for Literacy Integration Matrix” by examining different instructional strategies that can be implemented to promote balanced literacy curriculum for all students.

Part B: Summary

In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on the following:

· Justify the importance of using a variety of instructional strategies to create a balanced literacy curriculum and meet the diverse needs of all students.

· Identify three major components of a proper literacy learning environment.

· Discuss three routines that create a proper literacy environment that enhances reading and writing instruction using traditional and contemporary resources.
