Final Paper Outline
· Introduction
Your introduction should start with a hook to draw your reader in, establish your topic, and create interest. It should then provide very brief background on your topic before including your thesis statement and an overview of the main points of your paper. It should be a minimum of one complete paragraph of at least five sentences in length.
Signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. Before the bill was signed, African Americans experienced extreme social injustice, enduring negative effects of racism and discrimination, especially in the southern states. African Americans couldn't eat in certain parts of restaurants, couldn’t drink from the same water fountain, attend the same school as whites, and more. Even then, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress did not have the power to interdict social and economic discrimination, even following multiple civil right cases. The power that the Congress had during this time to enforce the Civil Right Act were weak. Eventually that power that Congress lacked was asserted by the official and final passing of the policy in 1964.
· Thesis Statement
Your thesis statement, should come at the end of your introduction to fully address your topic and the four main points of your position. Your thesis statement should be one sentence in length. It should be a statement, not a question. It should clearly and concisely establish your topic, explain why your topic is important, and address how it connects to the four main points of the Final Research Paper. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is significant to the U.S. Constitution as it economically equalized the Whites and the African Americans in the U.S., putting an end to segregation while strengthening the U.S. democracy.
· Heading for Main Point 1- After the Civil War (1865), and after 4 million slaves had gained their freedom, Congress passed Civil Rights Laws ensuring constitutional rights for African Americans. These laws were granted under the 14th and 15th amendments.
Each heading should address a specific topic or component of your paper. This area will be the body paragraphs of your paper. This section of the outline can be quite long and does not have to be condensed into only four headings. Within your outline, you must cite (within the text) at least six references; four of which must be scholarly peer-reviewed sources obtained through the AU Library databases. While this is an outline, all sentences must be complete thoughts and support your topic.
· Subheading 1- Although the 14th and 15hth amendment were put forth to ensure the constitutional rights for African Americans, they were never truly enforced in specific states, primarily the southern states.

For a time, civil rights advocates hoped for the best from the Republican Party, and devised a legislative strategy around winning support from Republicans and Northern Democrats(1st article)
