Hello class and professor,

I created a Grade 5 science lesson on the water cycle using Technology Integration Planning (TIP) model. This learning goal is that students can describe the phases of evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection through the creation of a digital concept map. The lesson starts with a short introduction by the teacher and a short educational video to stimulate background knowledge. Students then create a pair assignment using Google Drawings to have the stages of the water cycle organized, labeled images added, and each stage described using their own words. The lesson ends with a formative assessment by using Google Forms and a class discussion.

Based on the RAT Matrix, I concluded that this lesson is mainly a Transformation one. Technology helps students to make interactive concept maps, work together in real time, get instant feedback via the quiz and prove their understanding in a form that would have been challenging to do otherwise with paper-based activities. Technology does not just substitute traditional tools, but improves critical thinking, creativity and collaboration.

The RAT analysis identified areas of improvement too. I would build up the lesson by including peer feedback in the form of shared comments in Google Drawings and request students to compare their concept maps to real-world weather data to enhance the lesson. Such additions would promote more analysis, discussion, and use of scientific concepts (Hughes, 1). Generally, the RAT Matrix is a useful reflection tool in the sense that technology integration should be purposeful and supportive of the learning objective and not just added as a convenience.
