WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT
Self-Evaluation Conflict is a natural part of sports. A fundamental principle of sport is competition, and competition means that some win and some lose. The Olympics Games themselves were created from an atmosphere of conflict in order to provide warring Greek city states an avenue to express their conflicts peacefully (International Olympic Truce Center [IOTC], n.d.). Most people have negative feelings surrounding losing, but when sport is the goal, losing is an accepted possible outcome. This does not mean that conflicts are embraced by all. This is why referees in all sports are so necessary and at the same time, so reviled when the stakes are high. Organizations such as the IOTC have been developed to address conflict on an international scale, but sport leaders can do much to resolve conflicts through negotiation and other conflict management strategies. At some point in your career as a sport leader, you most likely will encounter a situation or numerous situations involving conflict. When addressed appropriately, using effective negotiation skills, all parties involved may emerge stronger for the experience. This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to assess and analyze your own conflict resolution and negotiation styles, strengths, and weaknesses.
Instructions For this Assignment, review the Learning Materials. Consider your own conflict management styles with the context of insights gained from the media and readings. For this Discussion, consider how the UM sport professionals in the media describe effective conflict management skills. Submit by Saturday, 11:59 p.m. ET, a personal evaluation in which you do the following:
• Complete Conflict-Management Style instrument (Hill,) provided in the Learning Materials.
• Complete the Leadership Self-Evaluation Template. • Support your template with concrete examples from your personal experience,
observations, and the Learning Materials. Be sure to use proper APA citations where appropriate.
PLEASE READ: Don’t use the categories and subheadings as this should read and (look) like an essay. Include citations there, though. Pillars need to be cited in APA format (single space) and include page numbers. Make sure Scott is cited and the reference should not include his first name. Include results of the assessment.
