Personal Leadership Style
Introduction
Leadership is the act of directing, controlling, and keeping a group of people under control. Leadership is a demanding task that requires one to have the right skills and attitude. It is also a learning process as it is almost impossible to be a leader with all the qualities, skills, and abilities. As a result, one needs to keep on conducting self-evaluation to the point of weak areas and work on improving them. As a leader, I have specific communication styles that I use as well as conflict styles that I use to handle cases of disagreement between members of my group. There is also a specific type of power that I use to retain power and control over members of the team and also ensure that the ideas and decision made are embraced and implemented by all members of the group. Moreover, it is only when followers accept the instructions and ideas of a leader with ease that one realizes how effective he/she is as a leader.
For communication style, I make use of the assertive style of communication because as a leader, I often own projects and ideas that I feel are worthy of being introduced and supported by other group members. Hence, I introduce ideas using "I" and also allow other members of the group to share their ideas and opinions hence allowing a healthy dialogue or discussion to take place. For conflict style, I make use of the compromise style of conflict management because I believe in creating a win-win situation for both parties. Lastly, I often make use of legitimate and charismatic power. The latter is in the sense that as a recognized company leader I have been granted mandate by the organization to lead a group. Hence they have to follow the instructions I give them. Besides that, I have a natural way of influencing people an ability that makes it possible for me to persuade people without application of legitimate power and they do as I instruct them or even embrace my ideas and opinions.
Different academic researches have been done by professionals concerning different communication theory, and as a leader, it is important to understand the theories. The more reason is that as earlier stated, leadership is a learning process and hence understanding the various concepts captured by researchers in these theories can go a long way in improving a person's leadership style. According to De Vries, Bakker-Pieper, & Oostenveld, (2010); leadership = communication which means there is no way one can be an effective leader without being an effective communicator. This is a unique theory because by learning how to communicate effectively, I would be a good automatic leader. On the other hand; Martins, (2018); claims that the power of a leader is highly dependent on the leader's ability to communicate effectively. This is also not ignoring that even for conflicts to be resolved regardless of the conflict management style that will be applied, communication must be applied. This means that the argument that leadership = communication seems to be bear a lot of weight and accuracy. To use this theory, I would need to communicate more often and ensure that communication is clear and precise.
Another article by Abyad, (2011) claims that; for one to grow from a single culture leader to a multicultural leader, one must learn how to communicate in a manner that embraces people from different cultures. The more reason is that people from different cultural backgrounds communicate differently. It is by understanding and communicating in a manner that one feels comfortable when communicating to any team irrespective of their cultural background and they do not feel offended by the message that makes one an exceptional leader (Sana, 2015). This is a critical theory that I feel I should embrace as a leader and learn how to apply it in my leadership style. Moreover, by embracing this grand theory, I would have also embraced the previous theory that leadership = communication which means that I will have made positive milestones.
As a leader, I will utilize the theory by first studying and understanding as many cultures as possible starting with local customs progressing to international cultures. Secondly, I would take time to learn how to communicate professionally in a language that is acceptable to all people as this is the only way I can become a multicultural leader. Again, as a leader, I would have to interact with as many people as possible and try to listen to them so that I can understand their likes and dislikes as their would also help in improving my communication skills to get to international standards (Bhardwaj, Sharma, & Deepshikha, 2017). It is a good thing that as a leader I have some good skills and qualities and this would work as an added advantage when it comes to the application of the newly learned theory (Sana, 2015). For instance, the fact I apply the assertive style of communication would come in aid when approaching people from different cultures and learning how to communicate like an international leader.
