week3
Sociology 100
Part 1
Objectives:
1. Review current sociological research related to race/ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in the US
2. Practice using UND Libraries to search for and cite peer-reviewed sociological research
Guidelines:
1. Each group member should search for one (1) peer-reviewed journal article related to race/ethnicity,
gender, or sexuality in the US. The article should be quantitative in nature (i.e., involving data). The
article should also have been published 2010-current.
2. At least one article in the compiled report should be related to a) race/ethnicity, b) gender, and c)
sexuality (i.e., all topic areas should be represented in the final report). If the article focuses on more
than one of these areas (i.e., intersectionality), then that is great. Also, note that each group member
should pick and summarize a different article (i.e., no duplicates).

a. What is this article about? (i.e., what is the research question or topic this paper is addressing?)
b. What are the characteristics of the sample? (e.g., data source, sample size, participants)
c. What are the overall results of the study? (i.e., study conclusions)
d. What do the authors state are important next steps to consider? (i.e., see discussion section)
e. Include a full citation of the article (i.e., either ASA or APA format is fine – see link below)
Grading and requirements (10 points):
1. Summaries should be approximately one paragraph (i.e., 5-6 clear and well-written sentences), and
should include a full citation using ASA or APA format. See the example references handout posted
under “Resources” in Blackboard, or the Purdue Online Writing Lab website here for guidance on full
citation formatting for peer-reviewed journal articles. Be sure to proofread your work!
Part 2 Week 3 prompt:
Using the UND Diversity & Inclusion website, identify at least three (3) resources (e.g., programs, events, groups) you think are supportive to Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at UND. What additional resources could be developed or expanded on to help advance Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at UND?

Class-related posts should be substantive and relevant to class (i.e., not solely based on opinion, assumption, or personal experience) and should be at least four to five (i.e., short paragraph) sentences in length (i.e., demonstrating review and understanding of the material)

This week we begin discussing various sources of identity in one of three parts. Our identities are complex and unique, and very close to us. What I want us to remember throughout these next three lessons, and beyond your participation in this course is that our identities are not choices but ways that we identity based on what society tells us we are. As we grow and learn about ourselves we become more aware of who we are in relation to other people in various ways, and this is true also in terms of the language society uses to label identities, which changes over time. For example, sexual orientation is not something we choose but as we learn more about ourselves and society learns more about what sexual orientation can look like, the words and ways we interact to express that identity can change. Don't forget - new/expanded information is needed for your response posts and you need to write a substantial response to earn points.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_5l2fwWGco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAJ-5J21Rd0 For your original post, describe a moment when you were aware of at least one of your sources of identity reviewed this week (race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity). Then describe what caused you to be aware of that part of your self in that moment. Only share what you feel comfortable sharing, and you must respond two classmates in a respectful manner - any use of vulgar or insensitive language or perpetuation of stereotypes will not be tolerated.
Original and response posts must each be a minimum of one paragraph (3-5 sentences) Where appropriate, please also connect your comments to the course material.
