Unit 3: Genetics (from Wed, 02/10/21 - to Tue, 02/16/21)
Introduction
Welcome to Unit 3! Biotechnology is changing what we think is normal and ethical. In 1978, the first test-tube baby was born (Edelson, 1978). By 2017, 1 million babies had been born in the United States using in vitro fertilization (IVF) (Fox, 2017), with at least 8 million born worldwide (Scutti, 2018). In 1982, the human version of insulin that is produced within genetically engineered bacterial cells was marketed as a treatment for diabetes (Altman, 1982). Today, thousands of drugs and products are produced using gene splicing or genetic engineering—from enzymes to make cheese to engineered cells that attack cancer! All of this is possible because we have learned what DNA is, how it works, and its role in cells. Now, it’s your turn to learn about this amazing molecule, trace how it is passed from one generation to the next, and investigate the use of this knowledge. In this unit, you will do the following:
“The rewards for biotechnology are tremendous—to solve disease, eliminate poverty, age gracefully. It sounds so much cooler than Facebook.” – George M. Church (Monroe & Rodman, 2014)
Follow the step-by-step directions below to successfully complete Unit 3.
