Share an example of a situation in which abuse of power, competition, distrust, or defensive behavior created a harmful climate in a conflict situation.

An example that I personally experienced was abuse of power. My supervisor at the time was on a power trip and took his position to his head. I can say honestly that I am a very reliable employee and dedicate myself to performing for my team and creating quality product. In my 23 years of working at any position that I have worked since I was 15 years old I have had promotions, pay increases, and awards for my excellent contributions to the companies I have worked for. After working 10 years at my current employer and my current supervisor who was only my supervisor for about 4 months decided he was going to give me a partially meets on my performance review. I was very angry, I tried to talk to him about what I was missing and he told me, "that if he gave me a fully meets that it would do me no good and I would not try to be better". To me this was just a way for him to dig at me for some reason. After a couple months, that supervisor was fired for HR related issues and rightfully so.

Identify the behaviors that created this environment. What behaviors would change this into a nurturing climate?

I was immediately on the defensive behavior in this situation, I wanted to have control and I was feeling threatened (Cahn & Abigail, 2014). The fear was that my behavior and work ethic that was, I feel, excellent, was not at all what my supervisor thought. The insecurity that I felt as a leader to my group lead me down a path of destruction. I was very upset and since I did not have the support from my supervisor to help me through the rough times that made me hate coming to work. I let my team down and lost interest in doing what was right. This all came from my leader and his lack of support that crashed me into a role that made me very insecure.  The nurturing climate that could have happened would be more on the supportive side of my leader and my supervisor guiding me to be better instead of putting me down to be better. Nurturing is a supportive side of the climate and can bring positive results in a situation like this example I provided. The best thing that happened was that the supervisor was let go and my new supervisor was the exact opposite in regards to listening and providing the support for me to be the best I can be and showing the nurturing support that a leader should provide.

Share an example of a situation in which abuse of power, competition, distrust, or defensive behavior created a harmful climate in a conflict situation.

"Power contributes to a harmful conflict climate when it is perceived as threatening"(Cahn,Abigail,2014).

I  have seen this so many times being in the military. A specific example that i can think of that sticks out for me is i had a really bad captain one year a couple years back. I want to say this was the most stressful time of my military career. She would make demands that everyone is to be at work 15 mins prior to her shift and if you weren't there you were getting paperwork. She would make it obvious and look at her watch as you walked through the door to see what time it was. Once i noticed this i started to do it back to her and there were a couple times that she would walk in later from her own expectation. When i confronted her that she wasnt there 15 mins prior to her shift everyday but we all had to her response was "I'm in charge and i can show up when i want". This will bring distrust and negative results for the work place fast.

Identify the behaviors that created this environment.

The behaviors that created this event were distrust in this ind individual. She also used threats to get what she wanted because if we were a minute late she was going to give paperwork. Once we heard and saw she was coming in late and it applied to everyone but her the trust for her was lost and no one wanted to work for her.

What behaviors would change this into a nurturing climate?

Some behaviors that would change this into a nurturing climate is to show us we can trust her by coming in with us and holding herself accountable like she is doing to everyone below her. Another behavior that could help change it into a nurturing climate is to cooperate with everyone and understand that soemtimes things happen that might stop you from being to work on time like traffic weather and sometimes just life in general. Being more caring might get people to work better together and for you.
