This Week- Week 3

Proposals (dissertation format)

 Introduction

 Background

 Rationale (gap)

 Research Questions & Hypotheses

 Nature of study (Study design-approach)

 Significance of the Study

Research Question / Hypothesis

 The wording of your RQ and hypothesis is dependent on how you are measuring the variables. The MAIN distinction to focus on is continuous vs grouping variables.

 CONTINOUS

 Numeric values that can take on a range of scores

 Ex: Self-esteem scores from survey ranging from 10-30

 GROUPING (Categorical)

 Values that reflect categories or groups (numbers assigned may be dummy coded)

 Ex: Gender

 *** BUT can also include purposeful grouping from a continuous variable (high vs low self-esteem)

Hypothesis

Derived from the research question

 Is a statement of prediction

Can include direction of results (directional hypothesis)

Hypothesis examples (in null and alternative format)

RQ: Are anger levels correlated with assertiveness in online students?

H0: Anger levels are not correlated with assertiveness in online students.

HA: Anger levels are negatively correlated with assertiveness in online students.

Hypothesis examples (in null and alternative format)

RQ: Is there a difference in the level of stereotype threat

experienced by students in traditional versus online

classrooms?

H0: There is not a difference in the level of stereotype

threat experienced by students in traditional versus

online classrooms.

HA: There is a difference in the level of stereotype threat

experienced by students in traditional versus online

classrooms such that those in the online classroom will

experience higher amounts of stereotype threat.

RQ/Hypothesis Notes

Focus on your variables (IV & DV)- must be measurable and reflect measures you select

Start simple for this proposal, you will have a chance to complicate things later;)

Last but not least

Peer Partners will be assigned and available to view on Gradebook by Sunday

After submitting your draft lit review/gap/rq/hyp on Sunday also send via email to your peer partner

You can access your partner’s email through Blackboard -please select your partner’s name only so the email does not go to the entire class;)

1. On Sunday night, after you upload the Week 3 assignment ‘Draft of Manuscript Introduction’ please send the same

paper in an email to your peer partner. You can access emails in Blackboard under Email --> Select Users (select

partner name only).

2. After you receive your partner’s paper and make comments, you will upload your review of their paper under

Week 4 Assignment (Peer Review of Partner’s Draft Manuscript Introduction/Lit Review).

-You can add comments directly to your peer’s paper using the Review--> New Comment function in Microsoft

Word. Upload the reviewed copy into Week 4 assignment and email reviewed paper back to your partner so they

can see your feedback.

3. You and your peer will exchange papers on Week 4 (lit review, gap, and hypothesis), Week 6 (methods, results,

limitations), and Week 8 (final paper). The goal of the peer review process is to provide constructive criticism and

feedback while working toward a polished final project.

Our first round of exchanging papers can be tricky due to emails being lost, etc. so please aim for Sunday night to

send paper. Let me know if you do not hear from your partner by Monday (evening) and I can help facilitate the

exchange.
