Summary

In chapter 18, the book explains that when writing emails it is important to keep it direct but also brief to keep the reader focused. Also, to be very cautious when clicking “Reply All” know who you are sending your emails to. Make sure to keep the emails have no grammar errors as it seems unprofessional. In chapter 19, language in letters is significant because you must consider the reader and own up to your mistakes. There are different ways to motivate a reader as well as giving bad news. When giving out bad news there always needs to be an explanation and open with a positive note to help the transition. 

 

Analysis

When chapter 18 talks about writing emails and how important it is to keep the writing direct with no grammar errors I realized it is a necessity. When in a business you may contact people via email a couple times a week it not daily. If you make it look like one of the examples in the book of what not to do it looks very unprofessional and you are just writing to a friend not emailing about business. I have not had the mistake of replying to all in an instance where I did not want to before but now I will be sure to double check in case I send something that only needs to be seen by one specific person. In chapter 19, I really enjoyed the eight helpful tips that make donors want to donate as well as the five tips on how to soften the blow when it comes to having to give bad news. I know as a business major how important it is to accept responsibility for mistakes that have happened because if not that may cause a person to never want to have contact with the specific person or business again. With that in mind to consider the reader because then you are able to be more sympathetic if you try to see it from the other side. When focusing on the reader I never realized how much of an impact it would make to say something that matters until I read this chapter. If you say something personal it will impact the reader to either not be upset if it is bad news or they may be more motivated depending on the situation.
