Week 2 response to this forum:

The topic I have decided to choose for this week is social deviance. During my educational journey, social deviance was the class that I found most interesting. Simply defined, social deviance is a mindset or action that violates social norms or rules (Goode, 2011). Many things in society can be labeled as deviant behavior such as committing a crime, sexuality, and substance abuse. Most things that I would consider as deviant tend to be illegal acts, but that is not always the case. Opinions on deviance can differ depending on the individual or group. Yet, there are deviant behaviors, such as crime, that most tend to agree upon being “wrong”.

2. The article on social deviance I choose was Family Environment and its Role in the Emergence of Deviant Behavior, by Daniela Boboc. The main purpose of the article is to correlate how the family environment impacts the child. The author describes family being the most important component with determinant role of the child’s socialization (Boboc, 2017). In this article, they mentioned that if a child did not receive the care and compassion, they would more likely to commit crimes or have a higher likely hood of conducting deviant behavior. The article concluded that parents need to nature and set positive examples for their children in order to succeed and not become “criminal”.  The main reason I choose this article is because a parent can change the way in which they treat their child. As people, we can make a conscience choice to not do “deviant” things. However, when it comes to my research topic on racism and discrimination, most impacted by it do not have a choice. The way we are born is not in our immediate control. We can choose not to commit a crime no matter our upbringing, but I cannot choose my race.
