Being aware of which life roles are essential and which are peripheral helps to prioritize time and commitments. It is vital to effective time management, a core skill related to achieving a balanced life. Understanding which life roles will be important in the future helps guide the planning behavior of children and adolescents. Because life role self-concepts evolve, adults must also maintain a high level of self-awareness about which life functions are most salient in the present and are likely to be most salient in the future. Career development enables employees to learn better aspects of their work and improve their capabilities. It also helps them manage their time efficiently and ensure that employees' use increases over time.

Work has taken over the lives of many individuals in today's fast paced world. Vacations are often shorter and quality family time is often invaded by devices and the internet. Many adults suffer adverse health affects from work with 75-90% of all office visits to a physician being stress related. Many households include dual income families where both partners have work activities and domestic responsibilities they are required to balance. However, individuals experiencing a greater work-life balance have more family happiness, better health and wellness, greater job satisfaction, and better goal achievement (Sathyanarayana, & India, 2010).
In a study conducted with a sample of 182 respondents (119 women and 66 men), it was determined that life satisfaction increased with the number of major life roles the participant occupied. For example, individuals that were married and had children had higher life satisfaction than those who were unmarried or without children. In addition, it was mentioned that past research has also shown that those who combine work roles with martial and parental roles experience less psychological distress and greater life quality than those who do not (Perrone, 2000).
When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first daughter, he was a second year medical student and I was finishing my undergraduate degree in education, due to graduate right after her birth. I had toyed with the idea of teaching full-time after graduating, but we were thousands of miles away from all of our family, and my role as a mother became my top priority. I loved being home with my sweet girl, but at times also felt like "life was passing me by." On the other hand, a close friend of mine whose husband was also a medical student at the time decided to work full-time after having her baby and I watched her daughter. She often expressed the sadness she felt over missing moments and milestones with her child while she was away. It made us realize that both sets of circumstances were mentally taxing and required sacrifice, but that being in it together (with each other and our husbands) and the relationships we all shared, considerably helped ease our burdens and bring joy to our lives.
