Professor Hayburn and Class, 

The 2 topics that I chose to discuss are The Stamp Act and The Townshend Act. The Stamp Act was passed in 1765. Prime minister Grenville introduced this act. Under this act, it made anyone who purchased anything printed on paper they had to buy a revenue stamp (OpenStax 2022). This Act cause a lot of push back because they colonies didn’t have a lot of money.  The British government knew the colonists might object to the Stamp Act’s expansion of parliamentary power, but Parliament believed the relationship of the colonies to the Empire was one of dependence, not equality. However, the Stamp Act had the unintended and ironic consequence of drawing colonists from very different areas and viewpoints together in protest (Open Stax 2022). Then Patrick Henry introduced a new acted all Virginia Stamp Act Resolution which took away the Stamp Act and the British crown. There could be no taxation without representation.  Other colonies did not like this new law and they being to boycott goods and protesting in the streets.  Another act that was passed was the Townshend Act. The richer colonies thought that if the prime minister wouldn’t raise tax on the poor, then their taxes would double, and they would have to pay more. This act was passed in 1767 to place taxes on paper, paint, lead, tea, and glass (OpenStax, 2022.). All these products had to be imported by British which was gone be taxed due to colonies not having the buildings and supplies to make their own goods. I think both Acts are very significant today because we still must pay taxes on stamps and any goods that we get. A lot of the items that we have in the U.S. come imported from a foreign country and we must get them shipped over here so they way they are able to make their money is to make the items and we pay double for what they pay for them so they will make a profit off it.  The Declaration summarized the colonists’ motivations for seeking independence.  The Declaration helped unify the colonies so that they all fought together instead of trying to make peace agreement with British (Britannica, T.
