“The Danger of a Single Story” Speech by Ngozi Adichie The moment that stands out for me in this speech is when she begins to give details on the dangers of a single story. The effect of this moment is intense as it helps the listener to see the sense in her argument regarding how relying on one side of a story can influence our interpretation due to the human tendency of sticking to the existing notion. A paraphrase for the main point of Adichie’s speech in my opinion would be two sides of a story complete a locket. By this, I mean that one can only make a reasonable conclusion by considering both sides of the story, as they are the elements that make the main story. A main story that only factors in a single story is biased and misleading in the sense. Adichie makes her point through directly communicating her point across and at the same time uses examples in the narration to exemplify her thoughts. As such, she employs ethos to provide personal experience and others who have similar experiences. Here she quotes her experiences with foreign literature in relation to her latter introduction to African literature. She also discusses the notions others have in regard to misunderstanding the African culture in relation to her impression of the Mexicans. This way, she is able to persuade the listeners to believe in her opinion. Adichie uses logos in her experience stories to offer facts through her examples and precedents. She also exerts authority through her deductive reasoning to sway the audience. She employs pathos by relating African to poor, hunger, pitiable, and much more, and Mexicans to poverty and immigrants among others to evoke emotions of the audience. An example of such as sentence is, “Her default position toward me, as an African, was kind of patronizing, well-meaning pity” (TED, 0:42-0:50) If I were to present a similar kind of a speech concerning my personal experiences, I would focus on the details and evidence that speak for my opinion.
