From your perspective, how does the material in your textbook on the topics of self-presentation and social perception relate to the passage from Matthew 7:3-5, in which Jesus asks: "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brothers' eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eyes when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Hello Professor and Classmates,

I think the topic of self presentation directly relates to the passage of Matthew. As the text suggests with self presentation we are “presenting the person we would like others to believe we are” (Gilovich et al., 2018). To elaborate, sometimes it is easier to neglect our own flaws and issues and shift our focus on others instead. When in reality we need to realize that we should center our attention on ourselves before we can judge another person. Furthermore, self presentation may not always be a good thing and can cause people to neglect to show their true authentic self.

Best,

Sandra

Re: Topic 2 DQ 1

Instantly, my thoughts go to passing moral judgement on others’ personal weaknesses, instead of reflecting and working our own personal flaws. Everyone’s values and common sense differs amongst each other, understanding our self-perception allows us fix within ourselves than to fixate on telling others what they ought to be changing. I dealt with a situation with my sister, where she instantly accused me of passing judgement on her different lifestyle, when I had just by asked a simple question to inquire an understanding. I could not believed that I actually referenced Jesus calling the religious Roman leaders hypocrites. I was shocked because here she was passing judgement on an assumption of judgement towards her that was not occurring.
