Intellectual Property Rights
The Internet has helped the spread of illegally copied music, movies, and software to individuals in countries throughout the world. This has made it more difcult to protect intellectual property and has threatened the music recording and the motion picture industries. The music industry is facing intellectual property infringement problems that were created by Napster and other music-sharing Web sites that transmitted illegal music les.
Piracy of computer software has risen to an alarming level and affects even the large companies equipped to mount a campaign against counterfeiters. The damages suffered by the software industry are staggering.
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 adjusts copyright laws to the Internet age by making it illegal to create, distribute, or use devices that circumvent technology-based protection of copyright materials.
