Emotional Intelligence

EI is more important than intelligence quotient (IQ) for building shared values and for guiding

organizations (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2002):

Quite simply, in any human group the leader has maximal power to sway everyone's emotions. If

people's emotions are pushed toward the range of enthusiasm, performance can soar; if people are driven toward rancor and anxiety, they will be thrown off stride . . . All leadership includes this

primal dimension, for better or for worse. (p. 5)

EI contains four dimensions, including (1) self-awareness, (2) self-management, (3) social awareness,

and (4) relationship management. Each dimension builds upon the preceding dimension(s).

Self-awareness reects a deep understanding of one's emotions, strengths, limitations, values,

motives, goals, and dreams.

Self-management resembles an ongoing inner conversation that facilitates one's mental clarity

and self-mastery of emotional states.

Social-awareness is the practice of empathy or developing genuine connections with the

thoughts and feelings of others and considering them when making decisions.

Relationship-management is the process of persuasion, conict management, and collaboration,

moving people in the right direction through resonance.

It is very important that leaders not only understand the concepts of emotional intelligence, but are aware of and able to manage their own emotions. Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee (2002) found that:

Employees and team members take their emotional cues from the leader. They will watch to see

how the leader responds to a certain issue and that will guide the way they respond. A leader's

attitude and emotions are contagious. This is why a leader's emotions can give people a sense of

clarity and direction in their work. (p. 9)

These characteristics require awareness and practice. The journey of self-understanding and becoming an emotionally intelligent leader (or follower) can be a very rewarding experience. It has far-

reaching implications and benets beyond that of the classroom and workplace.

Each of the EI dimensions contains several competencies. Working to develop each of these

competencies can enhance your EI.
