Week 5 Journal
Journal Entry
For my Week 1 Journal entry, I recited some of the skill sets that I currently have that
would apply to the role of an OD consultant. Those skill sets consisted of active listening skills,
attentiveness, confidence, empathy, and leadership. Moreover, there are three competencies
established in a consultant, which are (1) technical, (2) interpersonal, and (3) consulting. As for
my technical competencies, I would say that I have excellent technical skills in using different
databases, software, and programs. However, I desire to master the data analysis skill of
technical competencies as analyzing and comprehending data isn't a strong suit for me. As for
my consulting competencies, I desire to be more open and master the skill of creative thinking.
Creative thinking is a vital skill to have as an OD consultant. Creative thinking enables
consultants to develop solutions to specific concerns/issues that would ultimately be a
game-changer for the organization. Lastly, I believe that my interpersonal competencies are
well-rounded as I am naturally empathetic, I desire to tend to other's needs, and I am an active
listener.
Moreover, there are three roles played by consultants: expert, pair-of-hands, and
collaborator. Out of the three, I gravitate to the collaborative consulting role. The collaborator
consultant's role involves the clients. Therefore I believe that changes and improvements would
be more effective. As for the style that I would apply, I would use a combination of acceptant
style, confrontational style, and prescriptive style. These three styles collectively formulate the
approach I would desire to have as an OD consultant.
Lastly, I currently practice some of the necessary skills needed to be a confident and
skilled consultant. Some of those technical, interpersonal, and consulting competencies that I
believe are vital to becoming a confident and skilled practitioner are to practice positive thinking,
being comfortable with trial and error, ability to train, and communication skills. These are just a
selection of a few competencies that I have been practicing to become more confident in my
work and everyday life.
