Dr. Abbs and Class,
After watching the video “An Ethical Issue” and reading through the ethical standards of social work and case management I think that there were many things that were done right in the situation as well as things that could have been different. As mentioned at the beginning of the video there can be some grey areas in certain circumstances when it comes to handling ethical issues such as confidentiality. According to the NASW Code of Ethics “Social workers may limit clients’ right to self-determination when, in the social workers’ professional judgment, clients’ actions or potential actions pose a serious, foreseeable, and imminent risk to themselves or others” (NASW, n.d.). In this case, the case manager reached out as she was concerned for the safety of her client though I believe that she should have gone straight to a supervisor, should not have emailed a co-worker, or included the client's name in the email. Going to a supervisor when concerned for the health and safety of a client will allow for them to give the proper direction of when to call a crisis line as well as proper documentation. The roots of case management come from social work as the ideal and goal of each are similar, and case management focuses on an individual level. Ethical dilemmas within the Christian worldview could be handled in different ways but in a situation like in this case I belive that christiain would rally around the individual to support them and help them get the help and services they need in order to be safe.
I hope everyone is having a great week,
Emma
